Students and professors alike gathered around SJSU track star and heroes Tommie Smith and John Carlos monument to reflect on what they stood for.
Little red flags with the names of people who came to commemorate the 39 anniversary of Tommie Smith and John Carlos' historic raising of their black-gloved fist representing black power in the 1968 Olympics were scattered in front of the monument replicating this moment in time.
Cultura: Academy for the Native Arts had two women playing indigenous music from Mexico after the event.
When asked what this event represented, Mariebele Martinez said, "Opportunity to show a message."
