San Jose State University hosted its annual magazine day yesterday featuring guest speak David Friend, author of the book: Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11.
David Friend, masthead for Vanity Fair, opened his speech with background information of his past. Friend focused on the point that you never see a music day or newspaper day, but you still have magazine days. Friend emphasized that people still need books and magazines even when the Internet is taking over because of the 3D and tactile elements magazines and books give people that the Internet does not.
Friend moved on to his main theme of the speech, 9/11.
“2.5 billion people saw the 9/11 attacks on TV and the Internet, about 1/3 of the population,” said Friend in a firm and shocking tone.
Friend pointed out two big breakthroughs in technology that changed they way we see the world. First, digital cameras became an instantaneous way of taking a picture and hosting it on the Internet, and second, satellite news casting.
Friend then showed a power point of the most shocking and rare photos and videos captured of the 9/11 attacks before and after.
The event came to a close with a brief session of questions from the audience.
