$170 MILLION DOLLARS
That is how much, or so Microsoft says, that Halo 3 sold in the US in its first 24 hours of release yesterday. From the estimated $125 million Halo 2 made in its first 24 hours, Halo 3 trumped its predecessor by $45 million. Now because this news comes from Microsoft reps, you are going to have to take this with a grain of salt until the data is released.
None the less, if these sales figures are true, Halo 3 will have made the most money in its first 24 hours over any other American media entertainment property. Ever.
This story is news worthy on a number of levels. First the impact of a new king of the hill in first day revenue for an American media entertainment property, if Microsoft is to be believed. Also, the prominance of not a movie, book, or CD at the top of first day sales but a video game. Yes, believe. Video games are here to stay, and they grow stronger and stronger as a medium day by day. Ignorant people will now stop having to be "afraid" of the video game uprising. It is here to stay.
